Therapist Emma Spencer
Hi,
I’m Emma, a dedicated and compassionate Interpersonal Psychotherapist based in Nottingham. With over 16 years of experience in the NHS and a passion for understanding the complexities of human relationships.
I specialise in helping people understand themselves more clearly, improve relationships, and feel more emotionally secure.
My work focuses on increasing self-awareness, strengthening communication, and supporting meaningful, lasting change.
I have the qualification, knowledge, experience and skill to help people resolve these kinds of problems.
Whether you’re navigating life’s challenges or seeking clarity in your relationships, I’m here to guide you towards a more fulfilling and authentic life.
My Story
I've always been fascinated by people and the stories that shape them. Why do we repeat the same relationship patterns? Why do some experiences stay with us long after they've happened? How can understanding ourselves more deeply help us create healthier, more fulfilling relationships?
My passion for mental health isn't just rooted in my professional training, it's grown through my own experiences of life's joys, losses, challenges and relationships. Like many people, I've experienced the complexities of family life, love, change and grief. Those experiences gave me a genuine curiosity about what it means to be human and ultimately led me to a career supporting others.
For over 20 years, I've worked in mental health, spending much of that time within the NHS in a variety of settings, including psychiatric inpatient services, community mental health teams, specialist rehabilitation and services for children and young people. Every role has deepened my understanding that our emotional wellbeing is so often intertwined with our relationships, with partners, family, friends and, perhaps most importantly, with ourselves.
Alongside my Nursing Diploma from the University of Nottingham, I've completed postgraduate training in psychological therapies, clinical supervision and, more recently, specialist training in Couples Therapy. In 2021, I moved into private practice as an accredited Interpersonal Psychotherapist (IPT) and Supervisor, allowing me to focus on the work I feel most passionate about.
What drew me to Interpersonal Psychotherapy was its belief that we don't exist in isolation. Our mental health is profoundly influenced by the quality of our relationships, the roles we occupy and the transitions we experience throughout life. Whether you're navigating a relationship breakdown, becoming a parent, grieving someone you love, recovering from emotional abuse or trying to reconnect with yourself, these experiences can leave us feeling lost or stuck.
I particularly enjoy working with people who are curious about themselves and ready to understand the patterns that keep showing up in their lives. Together, we'll explore where those patterns come from, how they may have once protected you, and whether they're still serving you today. I believe that insight creates choice, and with choice comes the possibility of lasting change.
My work is also influenced by Attachment Theory because I believe our earliest relationships often shape how we experience closeness, conflict, trust and vulnerability as adults. Understanding these patterns isn't about blaming the past, it's about making sense of the present and finding new ways of relating to ourselves and the people we love.
Clients often describe me as warm, down-to-earth and easy to talk to. My aim is to create a space where you feel genuinely heard, accepted and understood, without fear of judgement. I won't tell you what decisions to make, but I'll walk alongside you as you develop greater self-awareness, build healthier boundaries, strengthen your confidence and create relationships that feel safer, more connected and more authentic.
One of the greatest privileges of being a therapist is witnessing those moments when something clicks, when a client suddenly understands themselves with compassion instead of criticism, communicates differently for the first time, or begins to believe they deserve more than they've settled for. Those moments never stop feeling special.
Outside of the therapy room, you'll usually find me on the sidelines of a football pitch supporting my children, getting lost in a good book, exploring history, or finding creative ways to unwind. I'm endlessly curious about people, and I feel incredibly fortunate that my work allows me to meet individuals and couples at some of the most important points in their lives.
Therapy isn't about becoming someone different. It's about understanding who you are, letting go of what no longer serves you, and having the confidence to live and relate to others in a way that feels true to you.
If that sounds like the kind of journey you're looking for, I'd love to hear from you.
